Visiting US Assistant Secy warns of withdrawing MCC pact if not endorsed pronto

KATHMANDU: Visiting Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs of the United States Department of State Ambassador Donald Lu has warned of withdrawing the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement if it is not endorsed at the earliest.

He said so during a meeting with CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal in Singha Durbar on Friday.

Political parties in Nepal have been sharply divided over its parliamentary ratification.

During the meeting, Assistant Secretary Lu urged Dahal to endorse the MCC compact as soon as possible.

In response, Dahal said that a decision on the MCC pact will be made after holding discussions with ruling parties, civil society and journalists.[

He also thanked the US for providing Covid-19 vaccines and other assistance to Nepal.

The duo discussed matters related to bilateral relations and mutual interests between the two countries.

A Standing Committee meeting of the party held on November 9 had decided that the MCC should only be passed after amendments to some clauses.
