Lamichhane writes to CAN, says will not play cricket until he gets clean chit

KATHMANDU: Former national cricket team captain Sandip Lamichhane, who was sentenced to eight years in prison term along with Rs 500,000 as fine and compensation after finding him guilty of rape, announced that he would not play cricket until he gets clean chit.

He wrote to the Cricket Association of Nepal and said that he would not play any kind of cricket tournament.

CAN had been waiting for the verdict of the court to make a decision on Lamichhane’s issue. But Lamichhane announced his decision prior to the CAN.

According to a source, he is preparing to play cricket only after he is acquitted by appealing at the High Court.

Though the Kathmandu District Court sentenced Lamichhane to an eight-year jail term rape, there is no need for him to go to the prison immediately.

He can appeal to the High Court. But it could take months for the process.

Earlier, the CAN had suspended Lamichhane after he was accused of raping a minor girl.

Lamichhane joined the national team after he was released after posting a bail of Rs 2 million.
