Dhanusha’s police station vandalised in protest against elderly woman’s death, one injured in police firing

JANAKPURDHAM: Locals vandalised the police station after a person died following a dispute between the two groups in Hansapur Municipality-5 of Dhanusha.

The situation became tense after hundreds of locals started vandalising the police station.

The demonstrators also pelted stones at the police personnel. Police opened fire to take the situation under control.

Shivashankar Mandal was injured in the police firing. UML cadre Mandal is being taken to Janakpurdham for treatment.

According to a preliminary investigation, Deepa Mandal was trying to separate the fighting between the sons of Shankar Thakur and Arun Mandal of Hansapur Municipality-5. Instead, the 65-year-old was injured in the incident.

“Mandal, who had gone to separate the fighting, sustained injuries on her head, Hansapur Mayor Pradeep Yadav said, adding, “But it is unknown who attacked her. She had also reached the police station. Later, she went to the hospital for treatment. She breathed her last during the course of treatment.”

Saying that locals vandalised the police station alleging that she died due to police torture, Yadav said, “Though the villagers blamed the police for her death, it has not been confirmed yet.”

According to him, the body of Mandal has been kept at the Provincial Hospital, Janakpurdham for postmortem.

SP Mitrabandhu Sharma, Chief at the District Police Office, Dhanusha, said that a person died following a dispute between the two sides regarding theft and the locals vandalised the police stations over the same issue.

“The situation is tense now. More security personnel have been sent. I am also heading towards the incident site,” he said.
