Man arrested for murdering wife over dowry

BIRATNAGAR: Nagendra Bhagat of Inaruwa Municipality-3 has been accused of murdering his wife Nikita Chaudhary (23) of Biratnagar over dowry.

The kith and kin of Nikita staged a demonstration outside the District Police Office, Sunsari demanding action against the guilty.

They said that Nagendra used to beat Nikita time and again in the past over dowry.

Nikita died on Saturday night. She was taken to the District Hospital in Inaruwa after she was found hanging in the bathroom, the family of Nagendra said.

The District Hospital, however, referred her to the Birat Teaching Hospital for further treatment. But she breathed her last on the way.

Nikita’s brother Rakesh Chaudhary said that Nagendra’s family has been telling different things about her death.

According to him, the Nagendra’s family has been changing their statement. Sometime, they said that she died after slipping in the bathroom and sometime said that the she committed suicide.

Rakesh has accused Nagendra of murdering his sister over dowry.

He accused 32-year-old Nagendra of murdering his sister by attacking with a sharp weapon on her head.

It has been learnt that Nikita had called his mother at around 9:30 pm on Saturday and informed that she was having a fight with her husband and family.

After half-an-hour, Nagendra’s niece informed Rakesh that Nikita killed herself by hanging.

Nikita’s family claimed that her sister-in-law had asked them to come to the District Hospital saying that she had slipped in the bathroom and was critically injured.

The family of Nikita claimed that the dispute started after she asked Bhagat to buy a sari worth Rs 4, 000.

Nagendra’s brother, however, claimed that there was no fight in the family.

He said that both the families had gone to Jogbani for the shopping of Teej festival, the day when the incident occurred.

Nikita’s family has filed a complaint at the District Police Office, Sunsari against Nagendra saying that he killed Nikita over dowry.

SP Bipin Regmi of the District Police Office said that Nagendra was taken under control on the basis of the same complaint on Sunday.

The body of Nikita has been taken to the Koshi Hospital in Biratnagar for postmortem.

SP Regmi said that they will start the investigation after they get the report of the postmortem.

Nikita was the second wife of Nagendra.
