SC annuls decision to cut former APF DIG Ranjan Koirala’s life sentence

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has overturned its decision to cut short the life sentence of former DIG of Armed Police Force Ranjan Koirala.

Earlier, the Office of the Attorney General had  filed a writ petition against the decision of the joint bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Koirala and Justice Tej Bahadur KC to reduce the sentence of Koirala convicted of murdering his wife Gita Dhakal on July 26, 2020.

According to which, he was released after serving eight and a half years in jail.

The verdict was criticised by the judiciary saying that the decision was in favour of the culprit.

Later, the Office  of the Attorney General moved the Supreme Court demanding to review the decision.

The Supreme Court had cut the sentence of Koirala  from life imprisonment to eight and a half years against the verdict of the Patan High Court to send him to life in prison.

He was released after the apex court cut short the sentence.

A full bench of acting Chief Justice Deepak Kumar Karki and Justices duo Tanka Bahadur Moktan and Dr Kumar Chudal upheld the decision of the high court today.
