Youths stage demonstration against MCC in New Baneshwor
KATHMANDU: Some youths staged a demonstration against Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) at New Baneshwor in the Capital on Wednesday.
They staged the demonstration under the name of ‘National Campaign against MCC’
Fatema Z. Sumar, Vice President of the Department of Compact Operations at the MCC, is arriving on Thursday to discuss the agreement.
The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) is an independent US government agency working to reduce global poverty through economic development.
The US government in 2017 had approved a $500 million ‘compact programme’ to Nepal.
But, Nepal’s Parliament has not approved the project yet.
If approved, the project will build a cross-border transmission line to facilitate electricity trade with India.
A section of people has been organising the demonstration arguing that the MCC is part of Washington’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, which has military components that are aimed at countering China, particularly to its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
