KATHMANDU: Krishna Janmashtami is being observed throughout the country on Monday.

On this day, Hindus celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna, who is considered the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.

It is believed that Krishna — biological son of Devaki and Vasudeva, raised by Yashoda and Nanda Baba — killed the ruthless King Kansa, who was his maternal uncle. According to the Hindu belief, by doing so, Krishna saved the people of Mathura.

Devotees have been thronging the temples of Lord Krishna from early morning today.

In the Capital, a large number of people flocked Sri Krishna Temple at Mangal Bazaar, Lalitpur, to offer prayers.

Devotees, especially women, spend the night chanting prayers and devotional songs, dancing and lighting oil-fed lamps.

The government has declared a public holiday today to mark the Krishna Janmashtami.
