Government, agitating teachers talks inconclusive

KATHMANDU: The government has started talks with the teachers who took to the streets to protest the school education bill by closing the schools.

The talks held at the initiative of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha on Thursday morning ended inconclusively.

Education Minister Ashok Rai and Secretary Suresh Adhikari were present in the talks at the Home Ministry.

Home Ministry press advisor Kamal Giri said that the talks with Nepal Teachers’ Federation Chairperson Kamala Tuladhar, who has been leading the agitating teachers, among others were positive.

Saying that the problems would be resolved through talks, Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha said that the problems of teachers are the problems of all.

He said that all the problems of the education sector would be resolved.

Urging the Federation to withdraw the protest programs, Minister Shrestha said that the federal education bill can be amended in consensus.

Teachers’ representatives, however, said that they would not withdraw the protest programmes until the bill is withdrawn.
