Govt declares public holiday on Prithvi Jayanti

KATHMANDU: The government has declared a public holiday on Prithvi Jayanti, which is observed on January 11 in Nepal.

A meeting of the cabinet held on Monday made the decision to this effect.

The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), which is a member of the current ruling coalition, had demanded a holiday on Prithvi Jayanti as a condition for participating in the government.

Prithivi Jayanti is annually celebrated in memorization of the birth of King Prithvi Narayan Shah who was the first king of unified Nepal.
