Facebook bans news in Australia over controversies on new social networking law

KATHMANDU: While there is an ongoing debate in Nepal about the need to register and regulate social networks like Facebook and Twitter, a new law on social media is also in dispute in Australia.

According to the BBC, due to controversy over the proposed new social networking law in Australia, Facebook has announced that it will ban Australian users from viewing and sharing news on its platform.

Some users have stated that content from certain news sites has been banned.

The proposed law would force large technology companies such as Google and Facebook to enter into agreements with Australian media outlets or pay a fee for sharing content.

Earlier, Google threatened to shut down its search engine in Australia.

But on Wednesday it announced an agreement with News Corp, the world’s largest news agency.
