EC urges government to fix date of local elections at the earliest

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has urged the government to fix the date of local level elections at the earliest.

Issuing a statement on Tuesday, the Election Commission said that it is ready to hold the elections by mid-April.

Saying that the Election Commission needs at least 120 days to make preparations for the elections, the poll body said that it is ready to hold the elections by mid-April.

Stating that the delay in announcing the date would create more difficulties, the Election Commission urged the government to fix the date as soon as possible.

The Election Commission said that it has already informed Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba about the constitutional and legal provisions regarding the upcoming local level elections, urging the government to hold the elections before the tenure of the local representatives expires.

The term of the local representatives is expiring on May 19. The Election Commission had recommended the government to hold the elections on April 27 and May 5.
