EC calls all-party meeting to discuss local level elections

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has called an all-party meeting for Friday.

Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Thapaliya said that the all-party meeting has been called to discuss the local level elections.

As many as 16 parties representing the Parliament and Province have been invited to take part in the meeting.

He said that the meeting will dwelt on National Assembly elections to be held on January 26 and ongoing collection of voters’ name list. The meeting also discuss the date for the local level elections.

“The main thing is to create conducive environment for the elections. We will fix the date as per the parties wish,” he said.

Earlier on December 24, the EC officials recommended Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to hold the local level elections on April 27 and May 5.

But, the government has not made any decision regarding the same yet.

Earlier on Tuesday, Khamba Bahadur Khati on behalf of the government had reached the Election Commission to discuss the local level elections.

It has been learnt the government was for postponing the elections. But, the Election Commission said that the elections should be held in April.

The local level elections were held last time in April and June.
