Debate on Global Gender Justice and Transforming Masculinities

KATHMANDU : Recently, the foremost international research conference on gender justice: transforming masculinities, from a local to a global perspective, concluded in Kathmandu. It was one of the events of the project Transforming Masculinities: Capacity Building for Men for GBV Prevention and Gender Justice. The conference gathered experts in the field with their research papers to establish gender justice and promote gender equality in society. They revealed the status of gender inclusion in Nepal and recommended actions to be taken for the purpose.

Since the world has been facing numerous societal issues for a long time, and continues to face them, one of the most persistent issues is gender discrimination, which is deeply rooted in people’s minds.

Serious action is needed to diminish this social evil from all aspects, from government to non-government, and from men to all genders. In 1848, the first activism of feminists paved the way for the advocacy of gender equality. There was a time when women were alone in asking for their dignity and rights, excluding and blaming men.

But times have changed now; men are proactive in treating people regardless of their gender. Women are including men not only to support their campaign but also in their household chores. This has brought about numerous changes in the field.

This is the essence of our conversation with Dr. Liza Lorenzetti, the Associate Professor at the University of Calgary, Canada, who is also a social activist and author. She explained how the global transformation of masculinities and gender justice occurred. What can be done for further improvement?
