7 held for hostage-taking and extortion of Bangladeshi nationals in Kathmandu (video)
KATHMANDU: Police on Sunday arrested seven individuals for their alleged involvement in the hostage-taking of Bangladeshi citizens and extorting ransom from them in Kathmandu.
A team of the Metropolitan Police Crime Division arrested five Bangladeshis and two Nepalis for their involvement in the case.
The arrestees have been identified as Jahangir Alam, Tahmina Begum, Amir Hossain, Md. Moshiur Rahaman, Salim Miya,Roshni Rai and Tara Nepali.
Police have rescued 6 Bangladeshi nationals who were taken hostage, said Manoj KC, Senior Superintendent of Police.
According to the police, the gang of racketeers brought the victims from Bangladesh, promising them lucrative jobs in foreign countries, and subsequently held them hostage in hotels and safe houses at various locations in Kathmandu. The gang then demanded money from them and from their families.
Police apprehended the gang after one of the victims filed a complaint at the police station, said KC.
