EC announces by-election in Chitwan 2 on April 23

KATHMANDU : The Election Commission (EC) has announced a by-election in Chitwan-2 (constituency) on April 23.

A meeting of the poll body held on Sunday made the decision to this effect.

The seat for the House of Representatives in Chitwan-2 is vacant after Rabi Lamichhane, who won the 2022 November election in the particular constituency, was found guilty in a citizenship case.

The Supreme Court (SC) on January 27  stripped Rabi Lamichhane from his position as a member of the House of Representatives (HoR) and the chairman of the the Rastriya Swatantra Party citing that the citizenship certificate he presented to run for the parliamentary election was not valid.

In the election to the member of the House of Representatives (HoR) held on November 20, Lamichhane defeated his closest contender Umesh Shrestha of the Nepali Congress (NC) with a margin of  34,162 votes.

Lamichhane had obtained 49,261 votes while Shrestha secured 15,099 votes.
