Local units will not be vacant just by the resignation of people’s representatives: EC
KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has furnished clarification after the CPN-UML expressed its dissatisfaction over the code of conduct for the people’s representatives to resign before filing nominations in the local level elections.
The EC spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Paudel said that the country would be pushed into conflict if this provision was not brought.
Speaking at a regular press conference of the Commission, Paudel reminded that there is provision in the law that those who wanted to register nominations in the elections cannot hold any public post.
“There is such a provision in the Act formulated in 2016. We will be compelled to cancel the nominations if such provision was made,” he said.
Paudel said that the local units will be affected only for 20 to 21 days. After that the new people’s representatives will take over the responsibility, he said.
He said that the local units will not be vacant just by the resignation of the people’s representatives contesting the elections.
The government has decided to hold the local level elections on May 13 in a single phase.
