Government to hold National Assembly elections on January 26

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to hold National Assembly elections on January 26.

A Cabinet meeting held on Thursday decided to hold elections for the 19 seats that have been lying vacant in the National Assembly, Minister for Tourism Prem Ale said.

The tenure of 20 members of the National Assembly is expiring on March 4.

Out of 19 seats that will be elected this time, one shall be appointed by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari and the rest shall be elected through elections.

According to the constitutional provision, the election should be held 35 days before the tenure of one-third of the NA members expires.

The Election Commission has suggested the government to hold the elections in the fourth week of January.

The government said that it will move ahead as per the suggestion of the Election Commission.
