Major hospitals of Kathmandu overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients (With video)

KATHMANDU: As new coronavirus infections have started surging in recent days, major hospitals of the Kathmandu Valley have been overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients.

Intensive care units, beds and ventilators of the major government hospitals like Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, Bir Hospital, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and Patan Hospital among others have started filling up with Covid-19 patients of all ages.

With the rise in number of patients, the Teku-based Sukraraj Tropical Hospital among other hospitals have started increasing the number of beds.

Information Officer at the Hospital Nawaraj Adhikari said that the hospital administration had decided to increase the number of beds with the surge in coronavirus infections in the recent time.

He further said that the hospital has also been preparing to construct other infrastructure as experts have warned that a third wave of pandemic could hit the country anytime soon.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, 473 patients are being treated at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while 91 are in ventilator beds as of Thursday afternoon. As many as 120 and 43 patients are in ICU and ventilator respectively in Province 1.

The Ministry said that at least 732 patients are undergoing treatment at the ICU where as 158 are in ventilator beds.

Nepal had recorded 3,700 fresh Covid-19 cases on Friday while 10,000 people lost their lives to Covid-19.

The number of active cases in Nepal stands at 34942 including 10,000 in Kathmandu Valley.
