We voted for Deuba after Oli shows reluctance to resign from PM Post, say Nepal-faction MPs
KATHMANDU: Lawmakers of Madhav Kumar Nepal-faction, who voted for Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba during the floor test, furnished their clarification on Thursday.
In the clarification letter, the lawmakers said that they gave trust vote to Prime Minister Deuba as party Chair Oli was supposed to tender his resignation after the reinstatement of the House of Representatives and losing the vote of confidence in the Parliament.
“The government could not be formed as per Article 76(2) of the Constitution due to the division in the party after the reinstatement of the House of Representatives,” a clarification letter submitted by a lawmaker read, adding, “The Prime Minister should have tendered his resignation after the reinstatement of the House of Representatives and should have taken initiative to form the government as per Article 76 (3) of the Constitution by appointing one of the leaders of the Parliamentary Party.”
“But, the then Prime Minister did not do so and become the Prime Minister as per Article 76 (3) of the Constitution,” the letter read.
The letter further stated that the Prime Minister should have tendered his resignation after he failed to garner majority votes during the vote of confidence held on May 10, 2021. Instead of resigning, he tried to become the Prime Minister by using various provisions of the Constitution which was against the party’s constitution.
The establishment faction led by Oli on Wednesday had sought clarification from the 22 lawmakers who had voted for Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba during the floor test.
The lawmakers said that they voted for Deuba for the reinstatement of the House of Representatives and formation of alternative government after then Prime Minister Oli dissolved the House of Representatives for the second time. On the basis of this, the party cannot take action against them.
